Massive Clashes As Road To Africa Club Glory Is Set

Lovers of the beautiful game of football could not have asked for a better draw than the one delivered by the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup on Friday afternoon. The road to continental club glory has been lined with some truly mouthwatering ties.

A collosus clash awaits as Al Ahly of Egypt will lock horns with South Africa champions, Mamelodi Sundowns. Pitso Mosimane will lead Africa’s club of the century against the team he lead to the title in 2016. The fact that Sundowns beat Al Ahly’s bitter rivals Zamalek to win that CAF Champions League trophy back in 2016 is just a little extra spice onto a drool enticing football feast.

Simba SC, who have been in an uncompromising mood all season, will provide an acid test for Kaizer Chiefs who are struggling to get into the top half of the domestic log in South Africa. If Gavin Hunt and the Amakhosi go through to the semis or final, it will go a long way in appeasing their fans who are currently baying for blood.

In the other quarterfinals ties, Wydad Casablanca play MC Alger of Algeria while recently crowned Tunisia League champions Esperance de Tunis take on the other Algeria representative, CR Belouizdad.

A North African Derby is always a feature in the quarterfinals as the region dominates the club continental competitions on a yearly basis. This year Tunisian CS Sfaxien will have to go past Algeria’s JS Kabylie if they are to make it the semifinals of the CAF Confederation Cup. It is a massive chance for both clubs to get their seasons onto a higher level than they currently are.

Egypt’s moneybags, Pyramids FC will be eyeing another final and they were thrown in the ring with Nigeria’s elephants, Enyimba FC. Raja Casablanca will travel to Soweto, South Africa with wind firmly in their sails after going through the group with not as much as a draw to stain their record. Orlando Pirates will certainly have to buckle up for that one. AS Jaraaf’s reward for getting this far is a trip to Cameroon for a date with the re-juvinated Cottonsport DE Yauonde.

The quarterfinal ties for both competitions are set for the weekend of 14/15 May, with the 2nd legs being played a week later.

The semifinals are scheduled for 18/19 June and 25/26 of the same month.
